People often ask how I got started in this business. It all began with a visit to the Riverton Fair when I was a teenager, on a date with my now-wife. I spotted a stunning, ornate Hitchcock rocking chair being raffled off for just a dollar per ticket. I bought a few tickets, hopeful—but didn’t win.
Fast forward about 13 years. I was 29, and my in-laws were heading to the Riverton Fair. I handed them money, asking if they could buy some raffle tickets for me. That’s when I learned Hitchcock no longer donated a rocking chair—but, to my surprise, the chairs were still being made just across the street.
Curious, I went online and found the very same style of rocking chair I’d admired years ago—now priced at $800, which was nearly a week’s pay at the time. It just wasn’t in the cards for us financially, so I started browsing the local paper. That’s when I found one used for $100. I was working, so I sent my wife to pick it up. She called me and said, “They actually have two, both in excellent condition—still $100 each.” I told her, “Buy them both.”
When I got home, I realized we didn’t have space for two rocking chairs, so I chose my favorite and listed the other on eBay. To my surprise, it sold for $300. Not long after, I bought a Hitchcock dining set for our home. Then I found another one I liked even more. I sold the first set on eBay and made a $900 profit—enough to cover the cost of the new set.
That’s how it started. I kept buying and selling to furnish our whole house. Once everything was in place, I took a break—for about six months. That was around the time of September 11, 2001.
As life began to return to normal, I heard it was the final year of the Pontiac Trans Am. I talked it over with my wife and said, “If I get back into selling furniture, I think I can make enough to cover the payments and insurance.” And that’s exactly what I did—I started selling Hitchcock Furniture to buy my dream car.
And that’s how it all began. What started as a way to furnish our home and fund a dream slowly snowballed into a full-time business. We took a big hit during the 2008 crash, and business never fully bounced back—but our passion for beautiful furniture and craftsmanship remains just as strong.
